Policies
Introduction
At Jem’s Pet Services, the health, safety, and wellbeing of every animal in our care is our highest priority. During periods of warm or hot weather, our services may be adjusted to ensure dogs are not placed at risk of heat-related illness or injury
Temperature Guidelines
Up to 18°C – Normal walks and services will continue.
18°C to 22°C – Walks may be shortened and routes adjusted to include shaded areas.
22°C to 25°C – Walks may be replaced with shorter individual outings or home visits where appropriate.
25°C and above – Walks will not take place. Home visits and enrichment sessions will be offered instead.
All decisions are made at our discretion based on temperature, humidity, and each dog’s individual needs.
High-Risk Dogs
Extra care is taken with dogs that are more vulnerable to heat, including:
• Flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs and Pugs)
• Elderly dogs
• Puppies
• Dogs with existing health conditions
In some cases, walks may be declined entirely for safety reasons.
Pavement & Surface Safety
We follow a strict safety rule:
“If the ground is too hot to comfortably touch, it is too hot for paws.”
Walks will not take place where there is a risk of burns or injury from hot surfaces.
Walk Timing Adjustments
During warmer weather, walks may be scheduled:
• Early in the morning
• Later in the evening
Midday walks may be rescheduled, shortened, or replaced where necessary.
Alternative Services
When temperatures are too high for safe walks, we may offer:
• Garden play and supervised outdoor time (where safe)
• Indoor enrichment activities such as games, stimulation, and basic training
• Toilet breaks and comfort visits
Hydration & Transport
• Fresh water is always available during visits
• Dogs are never left unattended in vehicles
• Vehicles used for transport are ventilated and suitable for safe travel
Emergency Situations
Our staff are trained to recognise signs of heatstroke and heat-related distress, including excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, or vomiting.
If a dog shows signs of distress:
• Immediate cooling measures will be taken
• Veterinary advice will be sought where necessary
• Owners will be contacted as soon as possible
Owner Communication
By using Jem’s Pet Services, you acknowledge and agree that:
• Services may be modified, rescheduled, or cancelled at short notice due to weather conditions
• All decisions regarding extreme weather are made in the best interests of your pet’s welfare
Legal Duty of Care
